I have made it half-way through. And it's not so wonderful as it sounds. Well, it is, but when you hear "a week with no worries" you probably think it means "nothing happens to worry her". Not quite.
No, what it means is this: for a week, I'm not allowed to worry. It doesn't matter what happens, wonderful or worrisome, I'm not allowed to worry. The world could be falling down around my ears, but still...I'm not allowed to worry.
I have to keep reminding myself about this new rule.
At first I didn't like it. Of course something's going to go wrong if I don't think about stuff and puzzle over it several (hundred) times. Those plans I made that look like they aren't going to work - I'm sure that if I consider awhile and think about the options and how to change them and fit them in and get scared that I can't figure it out after all and try harder and decide I just can't and still keep trying to get it all straightened out in my mind, everntually it WILL turn out right!
NOT.
It all started when I was listening to the radio. A sermon on the radio, that I didn't really want to listen to, but I was anyway, and the guy was talking about not worrying. And he challenged people to not worry for a week or something. Usually, I ignore a challenge. I might fail anyway, or not stick to it, so why try? Or I feel like it's not relevant to me. But this challenge caught my attention. I thought maybe I should try it. No worries. Commit everything to God, think it about it rationally, let Him take care of it, and not worry. Sounded wonderful, it was a perfect idea, it really, really was. Yeah, I needed to DO that!
And then I started worrying.
About not being able to keep from worrying.
And then I was worried that I wouldn't be able to stop worrying long enough to be able to start not worrying.
And if I could, would I last a whole week? A day, even an hour?
I guess it didn't really start with hearing the radio sermon that I didn't want to hear. It started way back when I was little, and wanted to figure everything out and take care of everything. And when I was a teenager, wanting to be in control, not being able to surrender everything to God and trust Him to watch out for me and handle my everyday life and plans and everything. And then being an older teenager, and letting all my plans and decisions weigh on me instead of giving them to Someone Who could actually manage the load. Obviously I couldn't, I was finally beginning to see that, and I finally know, for the first time in my life, that I really can't handle everything that happens in my life.
It might sound weak - well...it doesn't sound weak, it is weak. I guess all of us, deep down, are like that. Maybe I'm weaker than others...But we feel the strain and pull of every-day life, ad the extra stuff that gets thrown at us.
And now I wonder why, because there's a God Who just holds His hands out all the time, almost begging us to puts our cares and worries in His hands. I don't know why I waste so much time worrying about stuff isntead of just giving it to Him.
So, I finally got over worrying about not being able to not worry, and decided to just not worry. As issues came along and I was tempted to worry, I gave them to God. I did fail sometimes, but then I would keep trying, and - surprise, surprise, everything seemed to work out fine...Seemingly even more smoothly than normal. Not because things were so nice and easy - these past couple days have been anything but what I expected, and I hate changes of plans...Maybe because I have a peace inside, knowing that everything is safe in hands that can handle my plans better than I can.
So I have a few more days of this "week with no worries". The one thing I've found myself worrying about often is - when the week is over, am I going to start worrying again? I don't want to, but what if I DO?
Looks like this is going to be an on-going lesson. But no worries about it. If God can take me from worrying constantly to almost not at all in just several days, He can teach me how to keep not worrying. And I can trust Him. He proved it.
So I'm halfway through a week of no worries. They say it takes three weeks to break a habit...If I last 3 weeks, it won't be a habit to worry anymore...that would be good.
